In the latest episode of Eye of the Coach, Patrick Mouratoglou explains why Jannik Sinner is still very much a work in progress, but a work in progress that is most certainly on the rise and destined for super stardom.
“He’s not a guy like Carlos Alcaraz, who arrives at 19 and beats everyone,” says the coach, pointing out that we need to be patient with the Italian and give him some more time to fully grow into his game.
Key moments
- 0.15: Should we be worried that Sinner hasn’t reached a Grand Slam semi-final or won a Masters 1000 title yet? Not at all, says Mouratoglou. “Maybe he is going to be able to achieve it in a few weeks or a few months.”
- 0.20: Mouratoglou says that Sinner isn’t like Alcaraz. “He’s progressing extremely well. He’s not a guy like Carlos Alcaraz, who is scared of nobody and beats everyone. He’s not that type of player. But he has such an incredible game. He has now weaknesses and he is still developing fast.”
- 0.34: The coach adds that Sinner has all the tools and he’s improving every day. “He has no weaknesses, he’s still developing fast and he’s able to play shots today that he was not able to play six months ago.”
- 0.45: What does it all mean for Sinner, who is still 21? He’s going to win Grand Slams, says Mouratoglou: “His power on both sides is incredible, his movement is incredible, his serve is getting better. He’s gonna be there. He’s gonna win Grand Slams and he’s is going to win Masters 1000s. I don’t doubt it.”
- 0.57: Sinner simply needs to overcome his doubts and keep growing, according to the coach. “I think he doesn’t have the same personality of a Novak Djokovic or Carlos Alcaraz, who are players who have no doubt… I don’t think Sinner is like that – I think Sinner has more doubts and he needs to be sure that he can before he does it, and this takes more time. But his game is so huge, so incredible – I have no doubt that he will be there.”
